Potty Training to Use Litter Box

Potty Training to Use Litter Box

We are often asked how we “train” our puppies to use a litter box, what kind of litter box do we use and what kind of litter. First off, we don’t have to train our puppies to use the litter box.  They have all learned on their own. Here is how it happens: At about 10 days or so of age, the puppies begin to crawl or wobbly walk AWAY from their sleeping area to urinate.  IF the dam is not close by to clean them herself that is.  It is just natural instinct to keep their sleeping area clean. We used to start out by putting...

The Puppies’ 4th week

Half way through the puppies fouth week! I just can’t believe they are a month old now. In this week, we help the puppies to start building a conditioned emotional response (CER) to the clicker. Using a little bit of raw ground turkey or beef on my finger tip, they gain a “reward”to the sound of the clicker, preparing them to learn crucial behaviors such as pay attention, to make eye contact, etc. Here’s a quick overview of all our puppies learn beginning at four weeks: Recall (“Come.”) is one of the most important commands...

Lace & Gable Puppies 3 weeks old!

The “storm” litter is 3 1/2 weeks old! Learning how to play – with each other and with toys.  Teeth just starting to break through the gums or just about to.  Developing personalities, enjoying the enrichment activities we provide. The third week of the puppies’ lives began the critical socialization period, and now the real fun begins. Things are going to begin flying fast and furious at us as far as developmental periods and windows of opportunity go,the first 12 weeks of life are the most important for...

We Provide the Paint, but You are the Artist

We Provide the Paint, but You are the Artist

As Breeders, we provide the paint but you, the new family – are the artist! So often, people think that if they just pick the right breeder, puppy life will automatically be perfect.  This is not a totally true statement.  In the real world, it doesn’t really work like that.  Finding a good breeder is more like an investment and not  quite so much an outcome. Think of yourself as an artist.  Every artist knows that the paint is simply potential; if you do nothing with it, you don’t have anything to show for it except for dried paint.  A...

August 18th and 19th Paris had her puppies!   Two gorgeous brown puppies!  One male and one female.   Both already spoken for. The male looks to be a silver beige – light brown already and white between his toes and pads of his feet.   The female is VERY dark.  We thought she was black until the next morning. The sire of these two lovely ones is our Living Water Genteel Romancer “Gable”  who is a silver beige and Paris is a Cafe au Laite.

What’s Going On?

Just a little update as to “what’s going on” here at Genteel Standard Poodles. Lace is maturing beautifully – (Sofie X Tristan) and while a character and being a typical puppy, she is testing us at every turn, she is so sweet, cuddly and wanting to please!   We have plans to get her CGC certificate some time this year! Dove is too smart for her own good and the self proclaimed pack leader.  She begs us to teach her something new weekly!  She loves learning and showing off just how smart she is. We have a new...

All The Puppies Are In their New Homes!

Posted by on Mar 8, 2017 in Current Puppies | 0 comments

Well, as usual, the past 12 weeks flew by!  It feels like just yesterday I was nuzzling warm, still wet newborn puppies.  Praying over them, in my cupped hands that had a couple of drops of  frankincense essential oil on them.  Imagining their future and looking forward to giving them enriched experiences as they grew. The last of the puppies went home yesterday – all the way to Canada in a carry on travel carrier with two very happy people! We don’t have any immediate plans of another breeding or litter for now but there is a...

Critical Learning Period For Puppies

The Last Two Weeks of the Critical Learning Period For Puppies   The puppies are just a couple of days shy of 9 weeks old and are leaving or being scheduled to leave with their new families. While it is a very bitter/sweet time for us, it is a time of great excitment and more new learning experiences for the puppies and their new families. The new families are going to have their puppies for the last two and half to three weeks of the  “CRITICAL LEARNING PERIOD” (the critical development/learning period for puppies is from 3...

7 Weeks Old & Testing Aptitude

7 Weeks Old & Testing Aptitude

Today was a big day for the puppies!  Turning 7 weeks old means going through the testing exercises and matching up our observances of the puppies with test results to help determine which puppies will be the best fit for each family. We use the Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test. I look at these testing exercises more in a general way then as someting set in stone.  After all, they don’t predict the very individual aspects of a dog. I always think of temperament and aptitude tests as a snap shot in time. They are observations of behavior of...
