Growing & Learning

Puppies Growing and Learning at 4 Weeks of Age At 4 weeks of age now, the puppies are spending more time out of the box while awake – getting more exercise – Exercise builds strong, healthy minds as well as strong, healthy bodies.  🙂 We will be setting up the exercise pen in front of the whelping box tomororw so they can just crawl out of the box to play and exercise when ever they want to from now on. Sofie has pretty much decided she is done nursing them and they are doing great with their raw ground meat with a little bit of...

Puppies Turn 4 Weeks Old Today!

Today the puppies turned 4 weeks old! They met their first people outside of my husband and me with one of the “people” being a lovely young child who is learning how to gentely interact with a puppy. She and her parents will be back in a couple of weeks to see how well we can match up the perfect puppy for their family. The puppies did amazing and everyone had so much fun! They are still being exposed to at least one new toy and one new experience every day. One of their more recent new exposures was to a litter pan with...

Importance of Sounds & Music for Puppies

I posted a couple of pictures yesterday of the puppies listening to the different noises on a recording on my iPad in their whelping box.  I thought I would tell you a little more about the importance of exposing them sounds at this age. My goal is to balance the three types of sounds to create emotional stability and low stress levels in our puppies: Ambient Environmental “Centering” sounds. Harmonic/Classical Music A recent study has shown that classical music has a de-stressing effect on shelter dogs, and guess what?  Hard rock...

More on Critical Socialization & Enrichment

The third week of the puppies’ lives begins the critical socialization period, and now the real fun begins. Things are going to begin flying fast and furious at us as far as developmental periods and windows of opportunity go,the first 12 weeks of life are the most important for socialization. “Socialization” of puppies (or dogs), I beleive is one of the most commonly misused words, most likely because socialization in human sociology means a life-time learning. However, when we speak of puppies, the window of...

Three Weeks Old!

After their lunch time nursing, I put my iPad in with the puppies and play “sounds” for them. Thunder storms, Fireworks, Sirens, and many, many more. Usually they just curl up and go to sleep to the sounds but yesterday they all associated the sounds with the iPad and gathered around it to listen more intently. lol It looked like they were all watching TV or something. They are three weeks old...

13 Days Old

The Sofie/Tristan puppies are now 13 days old.  Their eyes are beginning to open, they are beginning to totter around the box and go potty away from where they are sleeping.  We have doing the early neurological exercises with them and they are no longer fighting being put on their backs but they now let out a sigh or a yawn and then relax as we gently rub their little chests. They are gaining weight well and really growing! Even our little one – the last born, that many of you know of as “Ki” (with a long i) He has been...

Why We Use Puppy Enrichment Exercises

Puppy Enrichment Exercises We are living right smack dab in the middle of a profound shift in what we desire our dogs’ temperaments to be. There is an explosion of interest in dog sports and an associated explosion in dog training and dog behaviorism studies. When centuries ago you might take your dog to the woods to hunt, or into the field sheep herding, now days, many dog owners are attending training classes and participate in sports; either artificially simulating their dog’s original function, or exclusively fun activities of dog-human...

Puppies – The First Few Days Of Life

Canine newborns perceive the world very differently than we do. They are  born deaf and blind. They can only feel their way around. Their most important sensory perceptions at birth are detecting a heat source- their dam’s and littermates’ and their sense of smell. You can watch them moving their heads back and forth until they first, detect heat and crawl towards it. The most important help you can provide is making sure the surface they crawl on is soft, warm and gives them some traction. Puppy’s well-being during the first few critical days...

Our Goal as a Natural Rearing Breeder

By Dr. Jeannie Thomason Extracted from the book: Natural Rearing: Breeding & Raising Dogs The Way Nature Intended “The goal of the natural rearing breeder is to produce truly sound puppies — mentally and physically. This means producing dogs with natural immunity. Natural, (or innate), immunity is part of a homeostatic, balanced state of the body. Natural immunity occurs when the body’s biological defenses work together to fight infection or dis-ease, keeping pathogens in balance and preventing unwanted biological invasion. This...
